Michelle Allen is an architect by profession and a self-taught collage artist. A few months after a strong earthquake struck her native Haiti in January 2010, she created her first collage, unaware that it was her way of dealing with all the pain, destruction, suffering and misery she was witnessing through the media. It is said that one’s pain very often takes one on a new journey, and so began  her  journey in art.

Her creative collages enable her to combine a lifetime love of nature with a romance of paper.

Each of her pieces is unique in design, blending bits of torn paper to make a distinct whole. The process is labor intensive, from collecting papers, tearing and re-tearing of papers, gluing many layers on canvas or canvas panels, and then applying a protective coat as the final touch to the pieces.

Michelle had her work published in the Petrichor Review(Issue 5, Winter 2014), the Upstream People Gallery(August 2013 online international Art Exhibition), the Ken*again, literary magazine( Summer 2013 issue), and the Stone Highway Review(May 2013 issue). As a parent of a public school student, she was featured in the Miami Dade Public schools parent periodicals  in 2012. She was also the featured artist for Blick Art Materials in 2013.

Many of her collages are part of private collections.

Magnets, throw pillow covers and tote bags are also created from her finished collages.

Michelle lives and works in Miami, Fl.
